When I saw the posters about the Guatemala service trip, I thought it was a great opportunity to see a new place and do service for those in need. As I started to look more into it, I found it was better than I expected because it was a trip where I can be a part of creating a sustainable health care system and learn more about health inequity in other countries. As someone aspiring to go into the healthcare field, I understand the impacts of social determinants and how a lack of healthcare resources in other countries like Guatemala causes a gap in getting adequate healthcare. I am a firm believer that health is a basic necessity that everyone deserves no matter their socioeconomic situation or any situation. I was excited to learn more about La Ciudad de Esperanza in Coban, Guatemala, and see how the ongoing project to become a sustainable community because I had not heard of a project such as this one.
